Session Range by Weekday — Strategy Guide

Weekday Range Patterns

Not all trading days are created equal. Some weekdays consistently produce larger ranges while others tend to be tighter. This report breaks down expected session range by day of week so you can calibrate your targets and stops.

Typical Patterns

DayTypical RangeNotes
MondayBelow averagePrice discovery after weekend; institutions positioning
TuesdayAbove averageFull institutional participation begins
WednesdayHighest averageOften the most volatile day; FOMC days
ThursdayAbove averageContinuation or reversal of mid-week move
FridayBelow averageReduced range as positions squared before weekend

Trading Strategy

Use weekday range expectations to set realistic profit targets. If Friday's average range is 30 points on ES but you're targeting a 50-point move, the statistics are against you. Conversely, on high-range days like Wednesday, you can afford to let winners run further.

Pro Tip
Combine weekday range data with ATR to create a "range exhaustion" filter. If it's Friday and the market has already moved 80% of Friday's average range, new breakout trades have very limited upside.
